A Fixed mindset is holding you back

For this week's tasks, we were assigned to make a blog post on two topics in articles that we have read. The first topic that I read and would like to discuss is "A fixed mindset could be holding you back". I find this topic very interesting as it's something that applies to everything in life but is really relevant to people who are in school or learning new things or skills.

How someone can develop this mindset:

Ever since you were a child the actions or the way you are treated can affect you for the rest of your life. The way your parents raise you is very important, by parents trying to make their child feel a certain way by making them believe they're amazing and praising them too much can lead to a child who everything to them is supposed to be positive and haven't properly been hit with reality and later down the line they won't be able to deal with or face negativity or anything they don't like, parents, are more likely to make their children have a brittle and fragile mindset.
Most parents or guardians make the mistake of trying to build their child's self-esteem up by praising them and telling them they're brilliant, making them believe there are no negatives and everything is going to be amazing. This creates a false reality, thus meaning this is going to lead to a fixed mindset later down the line.
There are ways to improve or fix a growth mindset but it will take time.
If you have a fixed mindset the best way to change it from what I've gathered is to:
  • Face and embrace your weaknesses and acknowledge them.
  • Instead of viewing challenges as tasks and a hassle view them as an opportunity to prove to yourself that you can do it.
  • Everyone is different so tactics for improving and learning will vary from person to person, try out new tactics, and experiment.
  • Instead of using the word failing use the word learning as every mistake is a way to better yourself and make sure it doesn't happen again.
  • Constantly set goals for yourself to keep you on track.
  • Celebrate your progress and achievement with the mindset of going again and keep hitting these goals.
I have somewhat of a fixed mindset when it comes to college study and homework, I look at it as a chore and don't appreciate what it's doing for me in the long run. I find it hard to get into the right concentration mode for study and limit myself, but I have been making improvements since last year I'm taking things head-on with a good attitude, setting goals for myself, and creating timetables.

The article that I read on this subject has a load more information and I'd advise checking it out here shorturl.at/eqJMR

Self-Doubt:

At some point in our lives, most of us go through a period of self-doubt or not being fully sure of ourselves. It's hard for us to actually realize we are doing it as we want to think we are fully sure of everything and be the best person we possibly can be but once you realize the signs that's when you can start working on it to try and restore not only yourself but your mindset and well being.
One of the most common things that contribute to self-doubt is comparing yourself to others. Sometimes we feel like we need to be at a certain standard and without meaning to compare ourselves to others trying to be more than the average person and caring about our image and trying to please everyone.
The thing that's so bad about this comparison trap is that you lose track of what makes you you and the goals you have and the things you want to achieve.
Another thing that promotes self-doubt is boxing yourself in. This can slowly affect people's self-esteem and make them feel like they're by themselves, the best way to help with this would be to speak to someones about your feelings and thoughts and really be vulnerable to someone or a group of close friends. There's a power in being able to be who you are and it will take people time to get to that stage but it once they get there they'll doubt themselves a whole lot less, they'll be on the path to coping with and healing their self-doubt
A lot of people deal with self-doubt especially in growing up and in school and trying to find out answers, at this stage people are still trying to figure out who they are and what they're going to do in their life.
Ways to help with this would be constantly setting goals and checking in with yourself and talking to people instead of keeping to yourself and letting your thoughts haunt you.
