XR Tutorial 04

Week 17 XR Tutorial 04 In this weeks tutorial it was all about starting the tasks and beginning the learning journey, Setting up oculus link so that can see the project in Vr, At first I was wondering why I wasn't able to see the unity project in the headset I was confused and didn't think it worked but the oculus was showing a grid system and had a completely new look so I knew it was connected to the laptop. Then I was watching the tutorials for the beginning the basics the man in the tutorial said that he will tell us how to sync the headset with unity. The first set of tutorials were mainly talking about how to operate the new tools that we installed with the newer versions. It took me a while last week understanding what these new installs do and why we have them.  It feels like I'm learning unity all over again, Its been really confusing only setting up all of this. Hopefully the next set of tutorials that I do will actually have some work with the headset and that th

XR Tutorial 03

Week 16 XR Tutorial 03 This week has been a weird one for tutorials, I had the one-to-one with my lecturer and there was a couple of options that I could choose, One of them would be continuing with the google cardboard path and installing an older version of unity. But this was too complicated for me and I didn't feel comfortable with this option so my lecturer asked if I had a VR headset. I have an Oculus headset which would mean that I can do newer tutorials designed for a headset, this would help my case a lot more.  Since ive gotten my Oculus working ive been finding it really fun. It interesting to learn a new skill. Since im on the new tutorials they've been longer but understanding them is going pretty good at the moment. Im still so far away from making the game but we are slowly but surely making it there.

Doing

Reading, Week 17 Doing This week is focused on coding your essays and research while I was looking over my work I realized that there is quite a couple of gaps in my research and that there's nothing linking them up at all. Things like a lack of annotated bibliographies I feel like I could have had a lot more research done and better use the matrix method. I feel like I haven't used the full potential of google scholar. So I got to work I started using google scholar and did more bibliographies based on the topics I have researched, I think the annotated bibliographies have really helped me understand what I'm talking about has been that voice over my shoulder making sure I know the material I plan on talking about in the chapter of the book. Im continuously adding to my paper trail and its satisfying to see it build up over the weeks, I'm glad we had that week where we learned about the matrix method I think it's crucial to this type of work and if you don't h

Analysis

Reading, Week 16 Analysis This week we had one-to-one sessions with our lecturer, this helped me notice a couple of things with my research. During our talks, my lecturer reviewed my matrix method and my paper trail. She said that I have loads of links for YouTube gameplay or reviews on YouTube as well as blog posts on the subject of the multiplayer storylines and how the co-op can affect gaming. This was all great but I didn't have enough academic papers or articles that would have in-depth study on these topics. When I was researching my topic for the book I realized that I could have way more to look into in terms of academic papers but I didn't know how to find the info. It's like it was out there but I didn't know how to reach it. My lecturer mentioned to me that there were good resources for this and one of them was google scholar, or using the library resources. We had a class for the library online one of the weeks but I didn't properly understand it so I p

Week 15 XR Tutorial 02 In this weeks project tutorials, we will be finally starting to work with the XR and VR tutorials and editing in unity, To start we had to install a new version of unity that has support for mobile, in this case, I chose to make my game for android since I'm going to build the app on my windows laptop. It was confusing to set it up at the start and it was because of this I procrastinated on this task.  Using google cardboard is a bit confusing because it doesn't seem like you can interact with the things going on in the apps on it. When I was playing the demo. On the first time I experimented with it when I put the phone in the headset there was no way to click the buttons in the tutorial, I don't know if this is a thing that can be worked around but for the moment I'll see how things go on. Exploring a VR Museum! Setting up my device to have a look at the museum scene was a complete nightmare. The instructions are old and dont work with newer ver

Annotated Bibliography

Reading, Week 15 Annotated Bibliography In this week's reading, we were learning about annotated bibliography. Annotate is the Latin word for taking notes or adding notes to and the word bibliography means book writing in greek. Together this gives you a list of books with notes, this is useful for research especially in our case for this book that our class is writing.  In most cases annotated bibliography consists of three key elements, these are Citation, Summary, and Annotation. The annotation is what takes up most of the writing work as you have to explain what's going on with it and why it's important to your research. The summary is a short paragraph that should be concise and hold no more than two or three lines with a brief overview. The citation is the header and is just stating what's going on or the title of the research document.  This week ill be doing one of my own annotated bibliographies towards the topic im talking about but first I want to show my upd

Planning

Image
Reading, Week 14 Planning This semester we're making our own book about gaming and media, throughout the weeks we will be building on an area of research we have decided on. The course was split into groups based on interest, each of these groups will be set on working on a particular topic. My group consists of David, Tudor and Ciara, We're researching the topic of Storytelling in gaming and each of us have brainstormed on this topic and have come up with sub-topics to write on. The subtopic that I'm working on is Cooperative play in a story game scenario. As I go through with my research I will be keeping track of my sources with "The Matrix method" this should make the process a lot easier with tracking the sites I've been visiting, it will make looking back on topics easier for me. Since I'm doing my research on Cooperative play in gaming and how this can correlate to stories. I will look at some story games that I already have knowledge of to start of

XR Tutorial 01

Week 14 XR Tutorial 01 This week I decided to choose the path of the XR, I was initially planning to choose the 2D game but then I realized that I could learn more about something I already heard a bit about but never really delved deep into it.  I saw this as an opportunity to learn something new rather than making another game like last semester. I am intrigued to further my knowledge on this subject and it should be fun along the way. Understanding XR: An application that I evaluated was Beat Saber and I evaluated this Vr game through personal experience and research on steampowered.com as well as other sources on youtube. This game is prominent in the Vr gaming scene and has brought the genre so far. Beat Saber | PSVR Review - YouTube Beat Saber on Steam (steampowered.com) Elevator Pitch This game is designed around building reaction time and hand-eye coordination. The game goes up in skill and there's a big skill gap between the new player and the experienced player. Although
