Reading, Week 14

Planning

This semester we're making our own book about gaming and media, throughout the weeks we will be building on an area of research we have decided on. The course was split into groups based on interest, each of these groups will be set on working on a particular topic. My group consists of David, Tudor and Ciara, We're researching the topic of Storytelling in gaming and each of us have brainstormed on this topic and have come up with sub-topics to write on. The subtopic that I'm working on is Cooperative play in a story game scenario.

As I go through with my research I will be keeping track of my sources with "The Matrix method" this should make the process a lot easier with tracking the sites I've been visiting, it will make looking back on topics easier for me.
Since I'm doing my research on Cooperative play in gaming and how this can correlate to stories. I will look at some story games that I already have knowledge of to start off and why I chose them.

Cuphead

Cuphead is a 2D multiplayer platformer where you search the lands to collect contracts from debtors, these debtors are beasts that owe their soul to the devil, the two main characters that you and one other person will be playing made a deal with the devil to bring the debtors to him and he will spare their souls.
This game would be a good example of a story game with great cooperative play involved, the game is solely built around two people playing, the moment you start the game it immediately shows you how to save your friends if they get knocked out, the game is made so that the bosses are easier to take down when you have a partner with you, this intern build team morale between yous and something that you can both enjoy.
The game overs a good storyline that both players can play through together.
I chose this because I think it's the perfect example of a great co-op story game.

Spider-Man 2 (2023)

Spiderman 2 is set to come out in 2023 and it has a much-anticipated release after the success of the first game as well as the sequel Miles Morales. These games changed the way superhero games were looked at and set the bar for games to come. The story as well as the gameplay was the highest tier.
The latest installment of the series is going to be a co-op where you and a buddy can play Miles and Peter and fight crime with each other, this will create an amazing dynamic as well as have a great time with a friend. I think having this co-op multiplayer on the main story will affect the story quite a lot, ending with Miles and Peters friendship stronger and teamwork better.

In my research ill be looking for keywords to better understand what I'm researching some keyword examples:
  1. Co-op
  2. Multiplayer
  3. Storyline
  4. Friendship
  5. Challenge
  6. Family
There are some games that I know incorporate qualities of co-op storylines some that I want to research more on are.
  1. It Takes Two
  2. Rayman Legends/ Origins
  3. Borderlands
  4. Gotham Knights
  5. Marvels Avengers
  6. Destiny 2
  7. Lego Games
  8. Mario
  9. Dying Light 2
  10. Assassins Creed Unity

Comments

  1. Hey Adam,
You guys chose a really good topic. Cooperative play for that topic is perfect and it sounds like you already have lots of knowledge about it to begin with. Omg I really hope you research more on Assassins Creed Unity! I would love to read about that one. I’m gonna save that co-op list so I can play them all because this sounds so good.
