XR Tutorial 01
Week 14
XR Tutorial 01
This week I decided to choose the path of the XR, I was initially planning to choose the 2D game but then I realized that I could learn more about something I already heard a bit about but never really delved deep into it.
I saw this as an opportunity to learn something new rather than making another game like last semester. I am intrigued to further my knowledge on this subject and it should be fun along the way.
Understanding XR:
An application that I evaluated was Beat Saber and I evaluated this Vr game through personal experience and research on steampowered.com as well as other sources on youtube. This game is prominent in the Vr gaming scene and has brought the genre so far.
Elevator Pitch
This game is designed around building reaction time and hand-eye coordination. The game goes up in skill and there's a big skill gap between the new player and the experienced player. Although there are people with quick reaction speed before they play the game, they excel quickly but still have quite a bit to learn.
Target Audience
This would be from 15 to 30-year-olds.
Vr Implementation
This game is an example of Vr, your set in your own virtual reality three-dimensional world where you're on a grid.
Supporting Technologies
On some of the controllers depending on what console you're on you have some haptic feedback while playing the game, when the player smashes the boxes there's a vibration.
Application Strengths
Some of the strengths this game has are its replayability of it and the constant updates with new songs and new level orders.
Areas for Improvement
I think this game could be improved with the way the boxes could be hit. Improving the diversity with how you could destroy boxes to add for greater difficulty.
Input, Process, Output
There are three different processes when looking at user testing, one of the biggest things when it comes to the input is the IMU, this chip is the key to minimizing the lag between the user and the headset and lowering the chance of motion sickness.
Having a powerful GPU adds to the performance of the IMU. Having a stronger GPU makes it easier to draw 3D scenes at higher frame rates with less input delay GPU's are 10 times faster at drawings scenes than CPU's making them much needed hardware.
When outputting taking into account the two lenses in the headset is the main focus. When looking through the headset these lenses sacrifice some of the fov that your eyes would normally see. To counteract this we would use pincushion distortion, this will give the impression that your fov is normal and that you are seeing as you would if you were actually in that 3D world.
Intro to XR Quiz
I'm okay with the result I will try a few more times to get a better score, some of the things I need to improve on would be the sound in the headset and the questions about 3D objects and their position in the Vr space.
Brainstorming
I mainly want to go for a game or an entertainment reality
Here are six ideas that I've been considering for the Vr application the three strongest for me would be the:
- Action Shooter
- Space Exploration
- Multiplayer Sandbox
Action Shooter Scene
Theres loads of different ways to show the world of an action shooter. Theres so many aesthetics to choose from. I want to go for something more grounded, something that would have easy to learn rules.
One of the games that i would be taking inspiration from would be the VR game Super Hot, this is a game where you are able to slow time while fighting large groups of enemies in buildings.
Space Exploration Scene
For this game/ application I want it set in the solar system where the player will be able too look around and gaze at the stars, learn about the solar system and get lost in the void of space. Something that inspired me to think about this would be starwars, this is because of the mad planets and alien life out there.
Multiplayer SandBox
This game or scene or game will allow the user to explore the different sides of VR enabling them to learn VR with their friends in a fun environment, i think that since VR is still new to this generation i think this type of application would be of good use for learning the ins and outs of VR. Most VR headgear consoles have a build in tutorial system but i think it would be good to add to this with an app in itself.
as the weeks go on i will further research into these VR XR topics and applications and I'm looking forward to how it all comes together.
Ayo, this is a very nice blog post.
ReplyDeleteI love Beat Saber, it's a really good game to review, and fun too to get to play it as part of a college assignment, it's probably my favourite VR game!
You have some sick ideas for your own XR application too. I've always loved Superhot, it's a really well made game and makes you feel like a god when you're dodging bullets in slow motion.
You've made a really good start to the semester my man, keep up the good work!
